D. Watkins is more than a bestselling author he is one of Baltimore’s most powerful literary voices, using storytelling to shed light on real-life experiences, community struggles, and the beauty of resilience.

Known for his honest and thought-provoking writing, Watkins has built a national reputation for turning lived experiences into impactful literature that speaks directly to the culture and the people.
A New York Times bestselling author, D. Watkins is best known for acclaimed books such as The Beast Side, The Cook Up, Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised, Black Boy Smile, and several other influential works. His book We Speak for Ourselves was selected as the 2020 One Book Baltimore pick by the Enoch Pratt Free Library, highlighting his role in shaping meaningful conversations across the city through literature and community engagement.
Throughout his career, Watkins has earned numerous prestigious honors that reflect both his literary excellence and his commitment to storytelling. His awards include the James Beard Media Award, Los Angeles Press Club Award, Gordon Parks Fellowship, Pratt Library Hackerman Writer Fellowship, Vernon Jarrett Medal of Journalistic Excellence, Society of Professional Journalists Dateline Award for Commentary, Gold Signal Award, Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars, Johns Hopkins University Distinguished Alumnus Award, CityLit Dambach Award for Service to the Literary Arts, and the Maryland Library Association William Wilson Maryland Author Award—a testament to his lasting influence in journalism, literature, and education.
Watkins has also made a strong impact in film and television. He served as executive producer of the Hoops, Hopes and Dreams and worked as a writer on the We Own This City HBO mini-series, where he also hosted the show’s companion podcast. In addition, he was featured in the HBO documentary The Slow Hustle, further expanding his reach into visual storytelling and social commentary. His written work has appeared in major national publications such as The New York Times, Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, The Guardian, and Rolling Stone, solidifying his presence as a respected voice in modern journalism and literature.

He currently serves as a professor at the University of Baltimore, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in History and Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing.
